Word Frequencies in Written and Spoken English: Based on the British National CorpusBy Geoffrey Leech, Paul Rayson, Andrew Wilson

Word Frequencies in Written and Spoken English is a landmark volume in the development of vocabulary frequency studies. Whereas previous books have in general given frequency information about the written language only, this book provides information on both speech and writing. It not only gives information about the language as a whole, but also about the differences between spoken and written English, and between different spoken and written varieties of the language. The frequencies are derived from a wide ranging and up-to-date corpus of English: the British National Corpus, which was compiled from over 4,000 written texts and spoken transcriptions representing the present day language in the UK. The book is based on a new version of the corpus (available from 2001) providing more accurate grammatical information, which is essential (for example) for distinguishing words like leaves (noun) and leaves (verb) with different meanings. The book begins with a general introduction, explaining why such information is important and highlighting interesting linguistic findings that emerge from the statistical analysis of the British National Corpus vocabulary. It also contains twenty four 'interest boxes' which highlight and comment on different aspects of frequency - for example, the most common colour words in English in order of frequency, and a comparison of male words (e.g. man) and female words (e.g. woman) in terms of their frequency.

From the Back Cover

"Stafford Beer is undoubtedly among the world’s most provocative, creative, and profound thinkers on the subject of management, and he records his thinking with a flair that is unmatched. His writing is as much art as it is science. He is the most viable system I know." Dr Russell L Ackoff, The Institute for Interactive Management, Pennsylvania, USA. "If…anyone can make it [Operations Research] understandably readable and positively interesting it is Stafford Beer…everyone in management… should be grateful to him for using clear and at times elegant English and … even elegant diagrams." The Economist This is the companion volume to Brain of the Firm and addresses the nature of viable systems, those capable of surviving. It does not use the neurophysiological basis elucidated in brain, but develops the same theory from first principles. This book declares that every enterprise is a system, and in particular must be a viable system. Viability is not just a matter of economic solvency; we need laws that govern the capacity of any enterprise to maintain independent existence. The Heart of Enterprise is full of examples (actual, author-generated examples) taken from management practice. "I consistently find that Stafford Beer provides the most useful analytical framework for understanding and managing an enterprise—public or private. Heart of The Enterprise offers a demanding but rewarding exposition of his approach and applications." Sir Douglas Hague. CBE

The book was delivered pretty fast (US to Europe in 12 days). It looks good, definately not worn out. It even bore the sugnature of it's writer. Great!

This is a book which should be read after Brain of the Firm. It expands the knowledge of control systems theory e.g. the point that the regulator has to be capable of generating a variety equivalent to the variety that has to be regulated or the regulator will fail. Also the full explanation of the viable systems model and that each level of recursion exhibits the viable system as an isomorphic mapping of that same viable system at the levels of recursion above and below it. Stafford Beer deserves one hundred stars and a book of such value and difficulty deserves much better publication. I find the paperback volume hard to hold. The book is too heavy and keeps closing which makes it difficult to take notes. The index appears good for a paper index but it is still difficult; twenty-four page references under "Ashby's law". My recommendation would be to print the book in three slimmer volumes with an even bigger index and also print it as an ebook as well as an audiobook. This material is just too valuable for limited publishing and it is a disservice to the author and his readers. The readers of this book need every assistance they can get to help them understand it.

I strongly recommend this book to the people interested in organizational behavior or the dynamics of the organization. It provides a deep phylosophical analysis of the interaction between the process and management. I can also recommend some related titles as Images of Organization (Gareth Morgan) How Many Grapes Went into the Wine (Stafford Beer) as well as other titles by Stafford Beer; this book is part of a series from the same author.
