The book was delivered pretty fast (US to Europe in 12 days). It looks good, definately not worn out. It even bore the sugnature of it's writer. Great!

This is a book which should be read after Brain of the Firm. It expands the knowledge of control systems theory e.g. the point that the regulator has to be capable of generating a variety equivalent to the variety that has to be regulated or the regulator will fail. Also the full explanation of the viable systems model and that each level of recursion exhibits the viable system as an isomorphic mapping of that same viable system at the levels of recursion above and below it. Stafford Beer deserves one hundred stars and a book of such value and difficulty deserves much better publication. I find the paperback volume hard to hold. The book is too heavy and keeps closing which makes it difficult to take notes. The index appears good for a paper index but it is still difficult; twenty-four page references under "Ashby's law". My recommendation would be to print the book in three slimmer volumes with an even bigger index and also print it as an ebook as well as an audiobook. This material is just too valuable for limited publishing and it is a disservice to the author and his readers. The readers of this book need every assistance they can get to help them understand it.

I strongly recommend this book to the people interested in organizational behavior or the dynamics of the organization. It provides a deep phylosophical analysis of the interaction between the process and management. To me, the most impressive thing about this book is the fact author Tomaric backs up what he says in the book by including a DVD of a feature length film he made for a mere $2000. While the film, "Time and Again," is not going to win any Oscars and may never appear on The Movie Channel, it's a pretty decent effort. Its production values are amazing when you consider the micro budget and they'd be impressive even if Tomaric had never told us how little he spent. The movie has a nice Twilight-Zoney feel to it, the performances are competent and earnest, and there's evidence in every shot that the director and his crew were not going to let the limited budget stifle their efforts to achieve quality.The DVD also comes with segments demonstrating many of the book's principles and how they were applied in the making of Time and Again. A lot of valuable insight is provided into the planning and human relations aspects of helming a film project. These issues are of critical importance in holding a team of talented people enthusiastic about your project even when they're not getting much, if any, financial compensation for being a part of it.The book itself is straightforward and chuck full of practical information. Some of it is technical, but none of it is hard to understand. Parts of the more technical stuff are getting a little creaky, because the book was published in 2008. For example, the author seems to lean toward film over digital in some respects, but digital has made such strides even in the last couple of years, in terms of both quality and public acceptance, that the issue of whether digital or film is "better" seems, in my opinion, to be a little archaic. Digital is now where it's at. But, anyway, the book gives a pretty good discussion of digital equipment and techniques and I'd say that discussion is still 95% relevant in 2010. I highly recommend this book.

This book focuses on how to produce a low budget film, that will hopefully get noticed, leading to a slightly hire budget film (which leads to an even more expensive film). It offers several pieces of good advice such as don't write a script with more than 10 characters, and make sure to get release forms from everyone on camera (I've been to shots where this didn't happen). What the book doesn't do is offer advice for folks like me who have a nice DSLR camera (and the skills to use it), but don't know how to block scenes.The book seems to assume you've got several years of training/trial and error under your belt, and know how to do the basics like light the scene correctly, and setup mics and editing software. If you haven't been to film school, this book will seem obvious. It starts with writing, or buying a script, then proceeds to pre-production, filming, and post production. It doesn't give details of the best way to find/vet actors or crew, just assumes you know that. I'm still shooting video shorts with my friends, and wanted tips on how save money (and time).

This book has basically everything an aspiring no-budget filmmaker needs to be able to start producing films. There are chapters covering everything from writing a script to post-production. Each chapter has enough information that you could walk onto a set and have enough knowledge to get the job done (or at least talk to those doing the job without sounding like an idiot). Sure, there are books that go into more detail about one aspect or another, but none are as complete as this. The bonus DVD, which includes the film that was produced as the basis for writing this book, some production-related documents, and raw footage to practice with, is another thing that sets this apart from most filmmaking books.If you can only buy one book to get your feet wet in independent filmmaking, then this is the book to buy.

About the Author

Giuseppe Aureliano Fabrizio, Ph.D., is with the Defence Science and Technology Organization (DSTO) in Australia, where he is responsible for the EW and adaptive signal processing section of the high frequency radar branch. Dr Fabrizio is the scientific lead for the development, testing, and implementation of robust signal-processing techniques to enhance the operational performance of modern OTH radar systems. Dr. Fabrizio is a co-recipient of the prestigious Barry Carlton Award for the best paper published in the IEEE Transactions on Aerospace and Electronic Systems (AES) in a calendar year on two occasions―2003 and 2004. In 2007, he received the coveted DSTO Science Excellence award in recognition of his contributions to adaptive signal processing for Australia’s Jindalee Operational Radar Network (JORN). Dr. Fabrizio has delivered OTH radar tutorials at the 2008 IEEE Radar Conference in Rome, at the 2010 IEEE International Radar Conference in Washington DC, and at the 2013 Radar Conference in Ottawa. He is an Australian representative on the IEEE International Radar Systems Panel, and is currently serving as VP of Education on the AES Board of Governors. Dr. Fabrizio was selected as the recipient of the distinguished IEEE Fred Nathanson Memorial Radar Award in 2011 for his contributions to OTH radar and radar signal processing.

Although there many journal articles and a Russian book on the subject translated by Barton, Fabrizio's book is the best, most comprehensive treatment of Over the Horizon Radar technology that I have seen.

By Dr. J R Barnum, WARF, SRI InternationalHardcoverAfter working with HF over-the-horizon radar (OTHR) for 40 years (1966-2006), it is my great pleasure that I was asked to review the comprehensive HF over-the-horizon radar book recently published by Dr. Giuseppe (Joe) Fabrizio from Australia. This indeed is an amazing volume. Through my interaction with Dr. Fabrizio during the drafting of his text, I must conclude that the author is a highly experienced and dedicated OTHR researcher and practitioner. I wholeheartedly agree with the previous Amazon reviews, particularly those from Scott C., Joseph Thomason, and Chris Baker.Indeed, I have been pleased to work closely with Australian HF radar enthusiasts since 1966, beginning at Stanford, then during subsequent technical exchange meetings. As discussed in the book, the WARF OTHR testbed was developed by Stanford in California during 1967 and demonstrated for the first time an ability for high spatial resolution with aircraft and ship detection. The WARF was transferred to SRI in 1970, after which time the greatest progress in OTHR was made, both in the U.S. and Australia. In particular, the U.S. Navy Relocatable OTHR (ROTHR) implemented four separate radar sites, patterned largely after WARF, three of which remain operable. The U.S., particularly SRI WARF, was pleased to transfer similar technology to Australia in the mid 1970’s, after which Australia developed the well-engineered Jindalee and multiple JORN OTHR systems. The WARF was decommissioned in 2006, following a joint experiment with visiting Australian engineers and the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory, who operated advanced digital HF receivers at mid CONUS field sites. With the HF high resolution technology firmly established, the advanced U.S. and Australian OTHR systems continue to flourish.Dr. Fabrizio has covered nearly every important research and development topic in OTHR that I am aware of. His mathematics are detailed enough to enable the reader to understand, apply, and push onward. His radar display examples are convincing proof that this technology actually works, in spite of highly variable (but nominally predictable and adaptable) ionospheric propagation conditions. I am especially impressed by the engineering emphasis on reducing low-frequency noise in the HF transmitters (which can cover up weak targets), and the excellent and timely digital technology developments in receivers and FMCW signal generators. The descriptions of adaptive signal processing are superb. Chapter 5, Surface-Wave Radar, is a very important addition, considering that this HF radar mode does not depend on variable ionospheric conditions, except insofar as near vertical incidence skywave (NVIS) clutter may add signal processing confusion (which can be mitigated through adept radar frequency management). The Bibliography and index are more extensive than I have every seen in an OTHR publication, which should give the student ample opportunity to explore any topic of interest. In that regard, I would suggest that the publisher recommend this book as a college text, or at least as required reference material for any course on HF radio propagation applications, most specifically OTHR.

Finally - a comprehensive state-of-the-art text for those of us interested in the long wavelengths at the left-hand side of the spectrum - and it's a great one! This 900-plus-page book is exclusively devoted to Over-the-Horizon Radar (OTHR) operating in the High Frequency (HF) band. By reflecting signals off the ionosphere, these phased-array radars are capable of surveilling very wide areas and detecting targets at very long ranges beyond the visual horizon.Somehow, at the same time, this book is both tutorial yet provides the depth necessary to benefit practicing scientists and engineers desiring to contribute to this expanding field. It fully describes the fundamental principles of operation at a level easily understandable for those new to this field, yet is packed with detailed descriptions of the relevant and state-of-the-art signal processing models and techniques. The book is also packed with real-data examples and experimental results that serve to demonstrate the real-world application of the signal processing techniques as they are introduced. In addition, the text contains a comprehensive bibliography close to 50 pages in length.While this book is a necessity for anyone interested or working in OTH radar, it will also be a useful addition to the library of any practicing radar engineer working at any frequency.

Covers modern signal processing techniques and systems such as adaptive beamforming, space-time-adaptive-processing (STAP), Likelihood Ratio Test (LRT), Generalized LRT (GLRT), Generalized Estimation of Multipath Signals (GEMS) algorithm as applied to blind waveform estimation, MUSIC. I kinda feel a bit hook-winked out of money on this one. It's only 3 markers on my Kindle for length, and the actual story only took up 2 of those. The story ended at 65%. The rest was excerpts. So this didn't really feel like 50 pages at all. When the last scene ended, I thought -- wait, that can't be it? I also didn't find the sex very hot for the build-up. I think this was a waste of good characters and I felt a bit cheated on content. If you haven't read the books in the series, I don't think this works very well; it's not a stand-alone. And even having read the others, I still don't really feel as if I knew these characters at all. I was disappointed since I loved the books in this series.

This short story was okay. I did find the ending sweet, but I don’t know if it was the length or the matter itself, I feel in some ways I read it just to get to the rest of the series.Gabriel Ashleigh, Ash to his friends, is a young man (20s) who gambled away his home and money in a card game against Francis Webster, a gentleman who went to school and was ridiculed by Ash’s older brother. In an attempt to remedy the situation, Webster calls Ash to him home so he may win back his fortune, but ends up asking him to wager his body.While the blurb/premise makes it seem like a dubious sexual interaction, the reality is Ash is insistent when Webster tries to say he has won and no longer is obligated to put out. The rest of the story is them having intercourse and Webster talking about how one of the Riccardians, members of an elite gentlemen’s club, was upset with him for trouncing Ash so thoroughly.Overall, this really was only okay, but does make me interested in the rest of the gentlemen’s club members.

I've read this twice now, and had two different reactions to it.The first time I read The Ruin of Gabriel Ashleigh (back in October 2015, right after it was published), it served as my introduction to the Society of Gentlemen series, and in that light it wasn't particularly memorable; it didn't grab my attention, nor did it make me want to read the rest of the series. I love K. J. Charles, though, so when I'd read my way through the rest of her oeuvre, I started in on the Society of Gentlemen novels, and my interest in and curiosity about the origins of Ash and Francis's relationship was sparked by A Fashionable Indulgence.Re-reading this story with a more in-depth knowledge of (and affection for) the Ricardians made all the difference in the world, and I found myself really enjoying the additional context and subtle character notes that it added to the series as a whole. It's a lovely backstory piece for readers already familiar with the world of the Society of Gentlemen novels.

A very fun short read about two characters introduced in A Fashionable Indulgence, Gabriel Ashleigh and Francis Webster. While it doesn't delve into the issues AFI does, it gives the back story of Gabriel and Francis, which is nice to have. It's not necessary to have read AFI-- it helps some, but I think reading this first would add insight when reading AFI.I love the attention paid to detail about Regency period--the men were _all_ about fashion, and KJ Charles knows what she's talking about. Some might think that there's too much detail, but that's really what the period was about--an excess on behalf of the gentry that exacerbated the divide between the landed gentlemen and the working class (hm, sound familiar?). The detail is all important, because that's what they lived and breathed. Cuts to one's wardrobe were taken seriously. It's like Mean Girls, only it's Mean Guys. And I think it's fascinating that the men were just as obsessed about their clothes as women were always portrayed to be. It's a wonderful insight, and very artfully done. A Fashionable Indulgence shows this in greater depth, so if you've tried this first, and liked it, you'll love AFI!

I will admit that I read this prequel novella after I read the other three books. Ash and Francis are wonderful characters that always stood out in the Society of Gentlemen series so it was great to read about how they found one another. Ash is a such sweetheart that I wanted to hug him at all moments even if he didn't always make the best choices. Francis wasn't as developed, but I still liked his character. Their romance was short and sweet...the perfect way to introduce the series.

Ash aka as Gabriel Ashleigh, has just lost his fortune, all of it, playing cards with Francis Webster. He goes to Webster and shenanigans ensue. It's hot and silly an part of a series by KJ Charles, that I have read and enjoyed. Some of the characters briefly mentioned will be met again, in their own books. And we'll see Gabriel and Francis more. This is just a sweet introduction to the series as a whole. I've read the series and enjoy KJ Charles style.

His only choices now are to commit suicide (not on Ash's list) or flee to the Continent or allow his father to get what he always wanted, Ash in the military and far out of sight. Then Ash is contacted by Webster for a chance to win everything back against his body.A very short tale that gives us how dear Ash met his lover Francis. This gives us a deeper look into Francis, beyond the cold demeanor he shows to the world. 4 out of 5.
