Flavio E. Goncalves Flavio E. Goncalves was born in 1966 in Brazil. Having a strong interest in computers, he got his first personal computer in 1983, and since then, it has been almost an addiction. Since 1993, he has participated in a series of certification programs and been certificated as Novell MCNE/MCNI, Microsoft MCSE/MCT, Cisco CCSP/CCNP/CCDP, Asterisk dCAP, and some others. He started writing about open source software because he thinks that the way certification programs have worked is very good for learners. Some books are written by strictly technical people who sometimes do not have a clear idea on how people learn. He tried to use his 15 years of experience as an instructor to help people learn about the open source telephony software. Together with Bogdan, he created the OpenSIPS boot camp followed by the e-learning program, OpenSIPS eBootcamp. His experience with networks, protocol analyzers, and IP telephony combined with his teaching experience gave him an edge to write this book. This is the fourth book written by him. This book serves as a good foundation for designing and implementing your own VoIP system. The author begins with the basics of the SIP protocol and its various components. The star of the show, OpenSIPS, is detailed in the next chapter. As the author explains, over the years OpenSIPS has evolved into the heart of a full-fledged SIP processing and handling solution. With its high traffic throughput, extensibility with modules and a powerful scripting language, OpenSIPS has you covered. The author thoroughly explains the installation of OpenSIPS on Linux. The author takes readers through a practical overview of the scripting required to direct the routing of SIP messages. Authentication is a critical function performed by OpenSIPS. This data needs to be persistent so naturally a database is required at the backend. The author uses MySQL for this purpose but the example scripts can easily be adapted to any other supported database. OpenSIPS comes with a GUI that makes adding/deleting users trivial, along with a lot of other useful functionality. This aspect is covered in a chapter of its own. The latter half of the book touches upon such important topics as interfacing with PSTN gateways, using the dialog module of OpenSIPS and overcoming the problem presented by network address translation. Configuring the Asterisk media server, using built-in and external monitoring tools for troubleshooting and securing OpenSIPS to thwart cyber attacks are covered in detail before the author wraps up with some advanced topics specific to OpenSIPS 2.1. All in all, this book doesn’t disappoint with chock-full of useful information spanning over almost 400 pages.
I was helping with this book as a reviewer and I had a chance to read it through.Several years ago, when I just started to learn SIP and SIP proxies, I have read the first edition of the book of the same author. It helped me a lot on my way of learning and implementing scalable and robust VoIP systems with OpenSIPS.Since that time OpenSIPS has evolved and added a lot of new and very important features.This book will be very helpful for those who wants to start with OpenSIPS and SIP protocol as well as for those who already has an experience with previous versions of OpenSIPS and want to learn new interesting feature of OpenSIPS version 2.If you are new to SIP protocol this book is a great resource. Reading RFCs and specifications (there are a lot of RFCs) might be bouring while following this book helps to upderstand SIP protocol trying to implement SIP server with OpenSIPS. That does not mean that this book will make you an expert of SIP protocol but if you are looking where to start, this book is the right place.Those who already familiar with OpenSIPS will find andvanced technics on how to implement SIP services, SIP NAT traversing and SIP security. You should definitly check chapter 14 that explains new OpenSIPS asynchrones mode that is a very interesting and powerful key feature of OpenSIPS v2. There are a lot of code examples and practical advices that can be very useful while implementing your own SIP infastructure with OpenSIPS.Have a good reading.

With more than 20 years experience in telephony and having worked with many Proxy Server and SBCs, I definitely recommend this book. This book can be a great learning experience for both beginners and experts. It covers a wide range of VoIP and SIP signalling concepts and practices and it would be a must read for anyone interested in setting up some sort of Voice over IP and Telephony platform.Over the years I found that people often struggle with network setup and NAT with SIP. This book can help you greatly with both. It also discusses various aspects of VoIP in a real world deployment that it is often overlooked.I have known the authors of this book for many years and they both have a great knowledge, experience and understanding of real life challenges and requirements of a VoIP Platform.If you are not sure what is a proxy server or if that you need one, please read this book, because once you understand and start using a proxy server such as OpenSIPS, you will forever wonder how you ever did without it. OpenSIPS is one of the best choices as a Proxy Server or a SBC with a great development team behind it.
This book covered everything I was expecting with OpenSIPS, VoIP is just where the telephony systems have headed over the years so it was worth knowing something about them. What I enjoyed most about this book was setting up the endpoints and having a call, pretty neat! Also enjoyed how the author goes into billing as well!

Harry gets a rude surprise when he shows up for his first day on the case, undercover as a production assistant, only to find that the company is producing Adult Erotica...porno, in a word!Still off balance because of the unusual environment, Harry is quickly embroiled in one problem after another, fighting to derail what appears to be a very strong Entropy Curse that seems to be targeting all the women on the set, and there seems to be no connections between the victims.On top of that, Harry is attacked by Black Court Vampires, led by Mavra, a dangerous and very old survivor of the pogroms and Vampire Hunts that occurred following the publication of Bram Stokers "DRACULA", which spelled out, in plain language, all the weaknesses inherent in the Black Court Vampires, and how to kill them so that they stay dead!! Only the very strongest, most vicious, survivors lived through that time, and Mavra was in that number. Now she has come to Chicago with the express purpose of destroying Harry Dresden, and every man woman and child that he has helped or cared for since he came to town.There's no rest for the weary, as Harry hurtles from one crisis to the next...full out mayhem on an epic scale! Harry must call in favors where he's able, and recruit from a very limited pool of talent, and while, as usual, he manages to put together a Dream team of potential power, even a win may leave him in an untenable position...it may take 'Blood Rites' to make things right in the end
Not much more needs to be said for positive reviews of this series. I am more than half way thru reading the current 15 books in the series, and intend re-reading them again to pick up pieces that I missed the first time. Not bad considering the first book was an "accidental" discovery.... guess Jim Butcher's teacher showed him - HA!
Synopsis: Blood Rites is the sixth book in Jim Butcher's The Dresden Files books. This title brings the vampires back into focus and has us dealing with yet another court getting involved in Harry's life.The book's main plot is primarily triggered by the Vampire Thomas of the White Court, who asks Dresden to take on a case as a personal favor for all the past times that Thomas had intervened to help save Dresden's life. The case in question involves a head of an adult entertainment studio who may be under threat from a sort of entropy curse similar to one that Harry had been subject to in the last book. In addition, it appears that the vampire Black Court has setup shop in the city and are also threatening Harry Dresden's life.What I Liked: Obviously I really liked how this book added to Harry Dresden's character lore by answering a lot of different questions we may have had or didn't even realize we should have asked at this point. I can imagine how some folks might find the reveals in this book as a little left field, but they're not really. They make a lot of sense given Dresden's journey thus far and I appreciate hw things got to this point. It only means bigger and brighter stuff for the future.And the plot in itself isn't bad either. What starts as a seemingly simple look into a potentially minor case becomes a major throw-down with not just one vampire court but two of them - both the Black and the White courts. That seems like a bit much given how past books had him pulling out all the stops to deal with just one of the courts, but don't worry. Dresden gets some serious help in dealing with his foes this time around.What Could Have Been Better: While the main plot was still compelling the main "mystery" as far as detective cases go didn't go so great. I feel like it was left largely underdeveloped in favor of other story elements involving the vampire courts.And while they generally had big plan for dealing with the Black Court with a preemptive strike before they could get a firm foothold in the city, the actually confrontation did feel a little underwhelming. Sure, Dresden has never been all that great in an extended battle and Butcher seemed to want to play to his strengths and keep things on the shorter side, but that was it.And as much as the notion of the guardian puppy was cool, it felt a lot more like noise in this book as it was just sort of there on the side even during more important plot developments. I know Butcher is obviously seeding the book with story elements for future books, but this could have been handled better.TL;DR: All that aside, this book left me feeling very fulfilled as a reader and fan of the series and I'm glad that Butcher tackled things in the way he did. This may not automatically be my favorite book in the series, but it definitely ranks way up there.
I don't usually leave reviews when they number in the thousands but I wanted to add my voice to the chorus. This is a great series, some are better then others but that is to be expected with a series with this many volumes. It would be far too lengthy to list all of the things I like about this author, the world he has, and Harry as a character. I will list the two minor complaints that I would make for almost every Dresden book. The author really should have educated himself on both firearms and the layout of Chicago (even though I know it was not his first pick for a city). His description of firearms is inaccurate and borderline embarrassing at times. He refers to guns either inaccurately or ones that just don't exist. However if that is my only major complaint then it is really understandable. Great work I am a big fan and supporter. I am going to list this review for almost all volumes of the Dresden files as I feel it is mostly consistent throughout. This is not my top favorite but it is still engaging and worth reading.
